It is already known that a two tier Joint Engineering Entrance (JEE) has been prescribed for admission to the IITs along with 40% weightage to be also given the Class XII board exams. The first of the two tier exam, JEE Main will be enough for admissions to the NITs and other non-IIT engineering and technology institutes funded by Central government. Top 150,000 candidates qualifying in JEE Main will be eligible for the JEE Advanced with the condition that they should also be in top 20 percentile of their respective boards. However, in this top 150,000 candidates eligible for JEE Advanced will have 49% of the candidates from OBC, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe category.
According to the reservation policy, General category candidates will have to be in the top 75,750 candidates in JEE Main overall merit list to make it for the second-stage JEE Advanced examination for entry to the prestigious IITs next year. In the remaining quota of 74,500 candidates for candidates from reserved category, 40500 will be from OBC (Non-creamy layer) category. Scheduled caste category candidates who may appear in JEE Advanced shall be 22,500 while number of Scheduled Tribe candidates will be 11250. The seats in IITs are also going to be distributed according to the same distribution for the shortlisted candidates for admission.
Candidates shall have to apply separately for JEE Advanced after clearing the JEE Main.
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and other educational boards have decided to declare Class XII Science results by June 30, including revaluations, in order to facilitate students apply for JEE Advanced. CBSE has also decided to declare the results of JEE Main by May 7, 2013 so that top 150,000 aspirants can apply for JEE Advanced.
