Totally surprising but true, low education cost, as much less as by about 50% including stay and fees, is sending many aspiring medicos from Indian middle class families to China, Russia and Nepal. China is the most favourable of the destinations where entire medical education may be completed for just Rs.15-25 lakhs. The cost, more than double of this is beyond the affordability of middle class Indians and limited number of seats in government medical colleges are the reasons attributed for the migration. Over 9,000 students are estimated to leave India each year for medical education and this number is steadily increasing each passing year the report says.
Indian doctors who study abroad and want to enter into Indian health system (practice in India) have to clear a screening test. According to National Board of Examinations (NBE), which conducts this test, of the more than 14,000 students who sat for the test in 2012, over 8,000 were from China, over 1,700 from Russia and over 850 Ukraine. Many students have to take this test multiple times before they can clear it.
It is alleged by FMGs (Foreign Medical Graduates) that the Medical Council of India (MCI) deliberately makes this screening examination tough often by including question from PG medical level, and hence passing percentage is low.
