In an important recommendation, the Bombay High Court asked the authorities to consider Information Technology as an optional subject for admission to Bachelor of Engineering Course.
Hearing a petition filed by Aakash Kamalapur, who had appeared in the Common Entrance Test (CET) in Maharashtra to seek admission to Engineering Degree course, a bench of justice from the Bombay High Court held that the marks obtained by him in Information Technology shall qualify in determining eligibility to seek admission in engineering course, together with marks obtained in compulsory subjects like Physics and Mathematics.
The eligibility requirement of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) demands a 45 per cent marks in compulsory subjects like Mathematics and Physics and any one optional subject which includes Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational subject. The Petitioner had passed in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as also in Information Technology (Science).
The court permit the petitioner to participate in the admission process from institutional seats quota as the Centralised Admissions Process is over in the state and only the institution level seats are there to be filled up. However, the provision will be strictly applied to institution quota seats only, the court held.
