Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC) Nagpur received conditional recognition for admitting 100 students for MBBS. The college had recognition for 60 seats until 1999. It has been getting conditional approval for 40 more since then as the State Government has failed to remove deficiencies pointed out by Medical Council of India (MCI) to make the recognition permanent. The second round of MBBS admissions has to begin today (Saturday 25′ August).
The renewal came on a temporary basis with Maharashtra Chief Secretary giving an undertaking to MCI to comply with the norms at the earliest. Though MCI had given an indication in the regard immediately after the inspection, the council has still not given the clearance in writing. Directorate or Medical Education and Research (DMER) is going ahead with the admissions from Saturday as the MCI website mentioned IGGMC as “Recommended for recognition from 60 to 100″.
However, the doctors’ community does not seem to be happy with this temporary renewal. It feels the State Government should take the issue seriously and immediately rectify all deficiencies.
