Woman & Non-Engineers To Get Extra Marks in CAT Score Looking at the decline in number of humanities and commerce students and the dominance of boys & engineers on the IIM campuses, all 13 IIMs have decided to offer extra marks above the CAT 2012 score to non-engineers and women candidates. Officials said, “we are looking for students form the other disciplines or diverse backgrounds. The B-school is looking for students from the various fields such as Humanities to get a wider perspective. IIMs are also looking forward to balance out the gender ratio.”

Contrary to expectations, the number of humanities and commerce students registered for CAT recorded a decline since last year. The number of aspirants from management background dropped by 11 per cent. Applications by humanities students went down to 3404 from 3,780 last year. However, recently released figures for CAT 2012 show that the move did not cut enough ice.

However, the encouraging part is that the IIMs can still look up to having more gender diversity in their classrooms as the number of women candidates applying for CAT has surged by 8.6 per cent this year. Last year 56,050 women candidates took the test, whereas, 60,876 women have registered for the test this year.

The range of extra (grace) marks to be given to female candidates and non-engineer aspirants is different for different IIMs, but they range from 2 marks to 20. Candidates will have to visit the websites of respective IIMs to see the amount the grace marks applicable to them.

The total number of candidates registered for CAT 2012 stands at 2,14,068 as compared to 2, 05,345 last year.
