A delegation of Indian students, assembled by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, is visiting Hebrew University of Jerusalem until August 31 to attend the sixth Asia Science Camp (ASC). ASC was started by Yuan-Tseh Lee, 1986 Nobel laureate in chemistry, and Masatoshi Koshiba, 2002 Nobel laureate in physics, co-proposed after the Lindau science meeting in 2005.
Much like the annual Lindau Noble Laureates science meetings, this regional similitude, gives students from across Asian countries a rare opportunity to interact with Nobel Laureates and other renowned scientists.
Keeping the tradition, this year too students will get to meet and learn from Nobel Laureates like Aaron Ceichanover (chemistry, biology), Roger Kornberg (chemistry, biology), mathematician Robert Aumann (economics), including cofounder Yuan Lee (chemistry) and Makoto Kobayashi (physics), chair of the ASC International Advisory Committee.
Working on the blueprints of its European inspiration, which has been held in Germany for more than half a century, ASC has an intellectually stimulating programme planned. The event itinerary includes plenary sessions, round table discussions, student-to-master dialogues, various competitions, social events and excursion.
Every year, DST extends support to bright Indian students to participate in this event. This year, DST has entrusted Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) to coordinate these activities, including the selection of the students. Nominations are invited from educational institutions of students who are pursuing science course with exemplary performance in mathematics, natural sciences including physics, chemistry and biology. Selected students receive all expenses towards their travel to Jerusalem and back by the DST. Two faculty members from Indian Institute of Science and a representative from DST will lead the Indian delegation to Israel.
Needless to say, that the students chosen to attend the event consider it to be an opportunity of their academic life.
