Soon the students enrolled in a regular degree program, will be able to simultaneously pursue another degree through open and distance mode from the same or a different university, if the recommendations made by an expert panel of the University Grants Commission (UGC) are accepted.
However, the panel headed by Central University of Himachal Pradesh Vice-Chancellor, Furqan Qamar, stated that a simultaneous pursuit of two degree programs under regular mode can not be allowed, as it would create logistical, administrative and academic problems.
The panel has made out a strong case for universities to promote joint degree programs in association with other universities or institutions of higher learning.
The UGC has forwarded the draft proposal to the VCs of all universities and sought their opinion within a fortnight to enable the panel take a final call.
Additionally the students will be able to pursue a certificate, diploma, advanced or postgraduate (PG) diploma course along with the regular degree recommends the UGC panel.
