Two boys hailing from Vidarbha, Sandesh Kalantre a standard XI student from Amravati and Manmohan Mandhana an IIT-Bombay student from Washim, were part of the five-member contingent representing India at the 6th International Olympiad of Astronomy and Astrophysics recently. Sandesh won a gold medal while Manmohan won a silver medal at the international event held in Brazil.
The trip itself was an educative one for the two young boys, as they learnt about the people and culture of many different countries, striking a balance between work and play. They also proudly educated children from other countries about the languages, food, clothing and other details about India. Sandesh, who is studying in Pune now, was one of the youngest members of the team even though this was his second stint at the Olympiads.
The last day of the event had all the kids giving each other a souvenir, which represented something special from their countries. The Indian team presented others with brooches with images of the Indian flag and map.
